COALITION PRINCIPLES

The ability to freely use the internet is an important right - particularly for LGBTQ+ youth, undocumented immigrants, young women exercising their reproductive rights, the elderly, and youth overall.

New Yorkers exploring sexuality, gender identity, mental health and contraception resources should be able to browse anonymously, without fear of being “outed” or having their personal data collected.
Youth should be able to access online resources without parental control. They should be able to educate themselves or seek services without consent by abusive or disapproving parents.
Immigrant New Yorkers should not have to “show their papers” online. Immigrants without official government IDs or credit cards should still be able to access online info such as anti-deportation services.
Elderly New Yorkers should be able to use the internet without showing their credit cards, official IDs and Social Security numbers. New York’s elderly - often victims of fraud by providing personal information - should be able to use the Internet freely, without having to show IDs or credit cards.
Nonprofits and others serving vulnerable New Yorkers should be free from government review and potential censorship. New Yorkers should be free to design their websites without being forced to seek approval from regulators who may engage in censorship.
